Emotions...Own them!

Let's talk about how our emotions can control us instead of us controlling them. How Jesus in John 15:11 wanted our Joy to overflow and not our emotions overwhelming us.  Emotions are important. Many times we make life choices while we are in the mood and nine months later you have the consequences of those choices (see what I did there? ha!).  Once we learn to have control of our emotions we can begin living as Jesus intended us to: "These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full." John 15:11

But how? Let's discuss how we can regain control of our emotions.

Many of us have heard of Proverbs 4:23: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."  This proverb must be imperative because it emphasizes ABOVE ALL. Why guard our heart ABOVE ALL?  Because "everything you do flows from it".  Jesus could have said ABOVE ALL guard your body, ABOVE ALL guard your house.  But He didn't. He said "ABOVE ALL guard your heart" because that is where our emotions come from.

We are always such concern with guarding everything else, aren't we?  We are guarding our diet.  But, yet we get involved with gossip and allow bitterness into our heart.  We guard our phones with passwords.  But, we don't guard our hearts when we enter social media, and our emotions go crazy as we read our feeds.

We must start guarding our thoughts, our hearts, and our words like we guard everything else, and that is when we will begin to live life differently.

Guard your heart above all else is not a verse only about what is within your heart. It is also about what comes out.  “What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them?." -Matthew 15:11.

This confirmed when Jesus said that “everything you do flows from it.”  Have you ever sat down and listened to someone during a conversation.  I mean listen to their heart.  Have you paid close attention to what is flowing from their heart through their mouth?

When we sit down and listen to someone, we can assess what is within their heart.  However what comes out of your mouth also enters into your lips.

You can sabotage yourself with declaring negative things with your mouth because your heart will eventually believe it.  I once heard a Pastor say “if you insist on saying what you feel, you will eventually believe what you say.”

For us to guard something, we must own it.  Therefore, to guard our hearts we first must own our emotions.

We sometimes hear, “He made me so mad!”  Since when is his responsibility to make you happy?

Some say: “She put me in a bad mood.”

When you talk like this, you are ALLOWING someone else to own your emotions.  Since when do we give our heart away to someone to guard?  You can’t guard what you do not own.  You cannot make someone else responsible for how you feel; you must own your heart to guard.  You must guard your heart to own your emotions.  You must own your emotions to control them.  That is your job.

It is your responsibility to GUARD YOUR HEART!  It is not your mother’s heart.  It is not your boyfriend’s heart.  It is not your friend's heart or that person spreading gossip.  It is your heart.  OWN IT! It is your heart to guard it.  It is your responsibility to deal with the frustration.  You own your emotions; they do not own you.

Once you own them, you can control them.  Once you can control them, you can change them.

Once you change them, your joy will overflow.
