An Open Letter to Youth who have left the Church

Disclaimer:  The following letter is not a passive aggressive approach to reach out to anyone in particular.  It is something that the Holy Spirit has been nudging in my heart to write.  I am not responsible for any nudging the Holy Spirit might do or pulling within the heart.  I am not responsible for any convictions anyone might feel as they read the following.

Dear Youth who has left the church,

I don’t know your reason for leaving the church.  I don’t know if you left due to a breakup, or because people were spreading rumors about you.  Maybe you simply didn’t feel at home anymore or you were going through something so unbearable that you were too scared to reach out to any of your pastors/leaders.  Whatever your reason may be, I am sure it is very valid and God sees your heart.

I do apologize on behalf of the church if you ever felt judged, discriminated against, left out, laughed at, mistreated, lied to or deceived.  On behalf of Christians who care for youth like you, I am sorry.

I wish I could tell you,“those things never happen at our church".  But unfortunately,  those things happen at every church.  We are human.  We make mistakes.  More than what we are willing to admit.  We are all work in progress.  But those are not excuses.

I can reassure you of someone who does not make the same mistakes we have done to you as a church.  Jesus.  Even though I would love for you to give us a second opportunity.  Perhaps come back and speak to someone as why you left and give us a chance to redeem ourselves.  But first, I would like to advise you to focus on Jesus.

He will not mistreat you, judge you, discriminate against you, make you feel left out, laugh at you, or lie to you.  Even if you decide not to return, do not lose sight of Him.  Keep your eyes focus on Him and your heart open to Him.  If your heart hears His voice today, do not harden your heart.

I’ll be praying for you!
